Every open-plan kitchen project in an Astoria two-family runs into the same question on day one: is that wall holding anything up? The answer is usually yes, and the way the crew handles the next two days decides whether the job goes smoothly or turns into a structural repair.
Establishing what the wall carries
In older masonry buildings here, interior walls that run perpendicular to the floor joists are usually bearing. Walls parallel to the joists often are not, but party walls always are, and so is anything under a stack of walls on the floors above.
The reliable way to know is to look — open the ceiling at one end and see which way the joists run and whether they bear on the wall or pass over it. A few square feet of plaster is cheaper than a guess.

And beams packed loosely to the wall above, so the wall settles a quarter inch onto the new steel and cracks everything upstairs. Packing is done with slate, steel shims and dry-pack mortar, tight, before the props come out.
Choosing the lintel
- Steel angle for a veneer or a single wythe — cheap, but exposed steel in an exterior wall rusts and jacks the courses above. Galvanize it and detail the flashing.
- Rolled steel beam for most interior bearing walls. Sized by the engineer for span and load, with bearing of at least 4 to 6 inches each end onto a padstone or a proper bearing block.
- Precast or cast-in-place concrete where fire rating or corrosion argue against steel.
Bearing is the detail people skimp on. A beam sitting on two courses of soft brick will punch through over time. A padstone spreads the point load into the wall.
